Wound care is one of the most common reasons families in Ghana seek professional home nursing. Whether from surgery, an accident, a pressure sore, or a diabetic foot ulcer — wounds managed incorrectly at home can deteriorate rapidly, become infected, and in serious cases lead to hospitalisation or worse.
Why professional wound care matters
It is a common misconception that wound dressing is simple — something any family member can do with supplies from a pharmacy. In practice, proper wound care requires clinical assessment, the right materials, sterile technique, and the knowledge to detect early signs of infection or poor healing.
An improperly dressed wound can:
- Become infected within 24 to 48 hours, especially in warm climates like Ghana's
- Develop antibiotic-resistant bacteria if treated with the wrong products
- Fail to heal properly, leaving permanent scarring or disability
- In diabetic patients, progress to tissue death requiring amputation
What a CareEdge wound care visit involves
When a CareEdge nurse visits for wound care, the process is systematic and clinical:
- Assessment — measuring the wound, checking the surrounding tissue, assessing for signs of infection, odour, discharge colour, and pain level
- Irrigation — cleaning the wound with sterile saline solution to remove debris and bacteria
- Debridement if needed — carefully removing dead tissue that prevents healing
- Appropriate dressing — selecting the right dressing type for the wound stage using clinical-grade materials
- Documentation — photographing and recording the wound in your digital clinical record for doctor review
- Family update — WhatsApp report to your family explaining the wound's current status
For diabetic patients: Even a small wound on the foot or leg should be assessed by a professional within 24 hours. Do not wait to see if it gets better on its own.
Signs a wound needs urgent professional attention
- Increasing redness, warmth, or swelling around the wound
- Yellow, green, or foul-smelling discharge
- The wound is getting larger rather than smaller
- Fever above 38°C
- The patient is in significant pain that is not controlled
- Black or dark tissue appearing in or around the wound
If you see any of these signs, contact CareEdge immediately. Do not wait for a scheduled visit.
